Rusty hinges and sagging windows

Hinges and rivets are what keep a window safely in place. If you see these signs, act quickly.

Warning signs

  1. Hinges or rivets are rusty, loose or missing.

  2. The sash sags, wobbles or makes noise when opened.

  3. The sash is hard to close or latch.

What to do

Stop opening the affected sash and have a member firm inspect it promptly. A sash falling from height can cause serious injury.

Replacing hinges

Use stainless-steel friction stays and rivets sized for the sash dimensions and weight, and ask for materials to be listed in the quotation.
